Last week, we had the opportunity to take an intermediate surf lesson with Tilegit Surf School in Playa de las Américas, and it was a truly rewarding experience. Tilegit is one of the few surf schools in the area that offers a full, structured program specifically for intermediate and advanced surfers, including regular group and private lessons and even video coaching sessions.
What makes Tilegit special is their flexible approach to all levels. While they are well-known for their advanced coaching program, they also run lessons for complete beginners. So whether it’s your very first time on a surfboard or you’ve been riding waves for years, Tilegit has a place for you. Our Session: From Pop-Ups to Video Coaching
We met bright and early at 8 a.m., which was perfect because the water was calm and nearly empty. Our instructor, Aleix, began with focused practice on the pop-up technique, one of the most essential yet often overlooked aspects of surfing, even for experienced surfers. Getting this movement smooth can make a huge difference in wave-riding.
Then we headed into the water. Although the waves were relatively small that day, that was ideal for perfecting our sideways riding and pumping techniques. When you master these skills on smaller waves, it becomes much easier to apply them later on bigger, more powerful ones.
After catching waves, we returned to the Tilegit surf school for video coaching. We reviewed videos of ourselves in action, analyzed technique, received precise corrections, and asked all our questions. It was incredibly insightful to see exactly what we needed to work on and to leave the session with clear areas for improvement.
The Surf Community
Tilegit Surf School is also about creating a real surf community in Tenerife. Located right in Playa de las Américas, one of the island’s most famous surf spots, the school is surrounded by waves that work all year round, making it an ideal place to learn and progress.
