Nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of La Palma, Anthea Café is a hidden gem where coffee cultivation meets passion and tradition. Owned by the dynamic duo Jens and Rosa, this boutique coffee finca is redefining the art of coffee making, producing exotic and specialty coffees that captivate both locals and visitors.
We had the pleasure of visiting the finca with Canary Green, a sustainable tourism initiative, and were transported into the rich history and promising future of coffee cultivation on this beautiful island.
A Brief History of Coffee in La Palma
Coffee farming in La Palma dates back to the 19th century, when returning emigrants from Cuba and Venezuela brought back coffee seeds and planted them on the island. These seeds flourished in the fertile volcanic soil, with coffee from the Canary Islands even earning a place of honor at the 1897 Universal Exhibition in Paris.
However, like many agricultural products in the Canary Islands, coffee production gradually declined over time. It wasn’t until recent decades that the tradition was revived, with efforts in places like Agaete in Gran Canaria paving the way. Now, thanks to pioneers like Jens and Rosa, La Palma is reclaiming its coffee heritage, proving that its climate and terrain are perfect for cultivating world-class coffee.
Water conservation is a top priority at Finca La Calabacera. They use a dripping irrigation system for their plantain plants, which not only ensures that each plant gets the right amount of water but also significantly reduces water consumption. This eco-conscious approach is a testament to their commitment to sustainable agriculture.

The Anthea Difference
What sets Anthea Café apart is the care and dedication poured into every step of their coffee production. Starting with organically grown coffee trees, handpicked cherries are harvested at their peak ripeness. The beans are then processed by a trained CQI technician, ensuring that every cup meets the highest quality standards.
Anthea Café specializes in small-batch production, often described as micro or nano-lot coffee farming. This approach allows Jens and Rosa to treat each batch with the individualized attention it deserves, resulting in flavors that are both unique and unforgettable.
Their coffee embodies the essence of La Palma, an island paradise with an extraordinary climate. Each sip reflects the harmony between nature, tradition, and innovation, offering a taste that is exotic, pure, and full of character.
Coffee with a Personal Touch
One of the finca’s most exciting initiatives is their “anthearizing” program. Inspired by friends nostalgic for authentic flavors, Jens and Rosa began offering the opportunity for individuals to “adopt” a coffee plant. Participants not only receive coffee grown from their very own tree but also enjoy the satisfaction of knowing the full journey of their beans—from harvest to roasting.
This personal connection to the coffee-making process allows enthusiasts to:
- Know the exact origin of their coffee.
- Visit the finca and see their plant flourishing in La Palma’s ideal conditions.
- Support sustainable, chemical-free farming practices.
- Enjoy coffee that’s crafted with love and care, without additives or artificial flavors.
The result? A cup of coffee that’s as personal as it is delicious, steeped in the charm of La Palma’s coffee-growing legacy.
