Many boats depart from the harbor of Los Cristianos for whale and dolphin observation, but only a few ensure that everyone, regardless of mobility, can fully enjoy the experience. Sustainability is not just about protecting the environment—it also means reducing inequalities and creating fair, inclusive opportunities for all.
We had the incredible opportunity to embark on a boat trip with Bat4All – Barco Accessible Tenerife, a project that proves how tourism can be truly open to everyone. Aboard the Santa Rita, our hosts, Fabio and Gianni, welcomed the Canary Green team for one of their many ocean observation trips. Their dedication to accessibility made this adventure unforgettable.
An Inclusive Boat for an Inclusive Experience
Our journey began with an introduction to what makes Santa Rita unique: it is one of the few barrier-free boats, designed to allow people with disabilities to enjoy this incredible experience. The wide ramp and spacious layout make it easy for wheelchair users to move around comfortably. Two corridors lead to the bow, where guests can sit, lay down, or relax while watching the boat gently cut through the waves. Another fantastic spot is the upper deck, which offers a stunning 360-degree view of the ocean.
A Journey Of Discovery
We set sail towards the first observation point, near the piscifactoría, a place where dolphins and turtles are often attracted by the fish. But, as with any whale-watching tour, sightings are never guaranteed—these animals move freely in their natural habitat, making every encounter unique.
We then continued along the cliffs, admiring the breathtaking rock formations that plunge into the water. Further offshore, just when we were beginning to lose hope, the magic happened—we spotted our first whale. Within seconds, an entire group surfaced, their massive bodies gliding effortlessly through the waves. Witnessing these incredible creatures up close was breath-taking.
Shortly after, we heard Gianni shout: “Dolphins!” In the distance, a pod of dolphins became visible, heading directly toward us. As they swam alongside the boat, we could clearly see their distinctive spotted markings—an unforgettable moment that highlighted the beauty of Tenerife’s marine life.
More Than Just A Boat Trip
After this extraordinary wildlife encounter, our hosts treated us to delicious Italian pasta, and we enjoyed a refreshing swim near a beach in Los Cristianos. Thanks to its mobile ramp, Santa Rita is one of the very few boats that allows people with reduced mobility to access the water safely and experience the ocean in a way that is often taken for granted.
This trip was not just about whale-watching—it was a testament to the fact that sustainability also means inclusion. Thanks to Fabio, Gianni, and Bat4All, more people can connect with nature and experience the wonders of the ocean.
