Beach Clean-Up in Las Galletas: Collective Action Creating Meaningful Impacts.

On April 26th, Canary Green organized a beach clean-up at Los Enojados beach in Las Galletas. Right from the start, there was an incredible spirit of collaboration among all the participants, which led to an amazing turnout. Nearly 60 people joined forces from 10 a.m. onwards and worked together to clean the beach, collecting an impressive total of 850 kilograms of waste.

Together is better

The event was made even more impactful thanks to the collaboration with the Ayuntamiento de Arona, as well as the participation of the Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Environment and Sustainability, Clara María Pérez, who supported us with the organization and provided the garbage bags needed for the clean-up. We are also very grateful for the enthusiastic involvement of the team from Iberostar, the Rotarac organization, the Mynd Hotel and Cactus Co-Living, and Cruz Creative teams.

During the clean-up, we discovered what was essentially an illegal open-air landfill. Motivated by this, everyone put in an incredible effort, filling dozens and dozens of bags and even transporting heavy items like beds, armchairs, and beams to the waste collection point. Thanks to everyone’s hard work, we managed to reclaim one of the most beautiful beaches in southern Tenerife, helping to protect its fragile ecosystem from further pollution.

After the hard work, we gathered together to enjoy a delicious paella generously provided by the Ayuntamiento de Arona and refreshed ourselves with Ocean Beer, our loyal partner that always supports our clean-up events.

Why Beach Clean-Ups Matter

Our beach clean-up wasn’t just about picking up trash — it was about inspiring change and raising awareness. Events like this are powerful reminders of the urgent need to rethink our relationship with waste, especially single-use plastics.

The sheer amount of cigarette butts and disposable plastics we collected highlights the ongoing environmental challenges we face. These items aren’t just an eyesore — they pose serious threats to marine life, birds, and even human health. By removing this waste and shining a spotlight on the problem, we’re taking meaningful steps toward a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations.

Beyond the environmental impact, these clean-ups also strengthen our sense of community and shared purpose. Coming together to tackle pollution shows that we’re not just cleaning a beach — we’re building a growing movement of people who care deeply about protecting the environment and are ready to act.

We’re thrilled to announce our next beach clean-up event, taking place on May 31st at Punta Blanca, Guía de Isora. This is another fantastic opportunity to join forces, make a real difference, and continue protecting our beautiful coastlines.

If you want to get involved, here are some tips for your everyday life to prevent more plastic from ending up on the beautiful beaches:

  • Shop with a reusable bag instead of a plastic one.

  • Use bar soap instead of liquid hand soap.

  • When going for a picnic, eat off conventional tableware instead of disposable ones.

  • Do not use drinking straws.

  • And, if plastic is used, separate it when recycling (in the yellow bin)
