During our time exploring Tenerife, we visited Bodegas Monje, located in the north of the island near El Sauzal. This family-run winery, with roots dating back to the 18th century, combines traditional winemaking with modern techniques, all shaped by Tenerife’s unique volcanic landscape.
We didn’t just come here for wine — it was the full experience. Standing between the vineyards, with views over the Atlantic Ocean and Mount Teide, you immediately feel connected to the island. It felt authentic, calm, and far from mass tourism. One of the most memorable moments was tasting local wines made from indigenous grapes while overlooking the coast — it really showed how deeply the environment influences everything here.
Sustainable Practices Observed
- Use of local grape varieties (Listán Negro & Listán Blanco) → supports biodiversity and preserves Tenerife’s agricultural heritage (SDG 12: Responsible Consumption & Production)
- Family-run, small-scale production → strengthens local economy and community (SDG 9: Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure)
- Adaptation to volcanic landscape → working with nature instead of against it (SDG 13: Climate Action)
- Experiential tourism model (workshops, tastings, education) → promotes awareness of local culture and sustainable practices (SDG 12)
At Canary Green, we believe that sustainable tourism in Tenerife is about experiences like this — where tradition, environment, and community come together. It’s a perfect example of responsible travel in the Canary Islands, offering visitors a deeper connection to the destination through eco-friendly activities in Tenerife.

Canary Green’s tips to enjoying sustainable tourism in Canary Islands
Visiting Canary Islands on holiday doesn’t give you free rein to leave your values and principles at home. We encourage travellers to seek out sustainable options and keep up with environmental practices while travelling. Our top tips for a relaxed and wholesome stay include:
- Consider green transport options. Are you able to take a ferry to the island instead of flying? While you are here is a car necessary? Investigate public transport links or choose green options such as electric cars, green-hydrogen cars or e-bikes.
- Choose destinations that value sustainability and choose green alternatives such as solar power, recycling and energy-efficient architecture. This extends to places that value workers’ rights and the impact on the local community.
- Bring your own water bottle with you and refill it instead of buying single-use plastic bottles.
- Make use of the recycling when out and about and don’t just throw your rubbish in the nearest bin.
- Take advantage of local knowledge and immerse yourself in the culture through campaigns such as #Ilovecanarias and #meatfreemondaycanarias.
- Most of all, have fun and enjoy your time in the Canary Islands.
