Beach clean-up for May happend on a very special day. Día de Canarias is much more than a public holiday. Celebrated every year on 30th May, it is a day dedicated to the history, identity, culture and traditions of the Canary Islands, a moment for communities across the archipelago to come together, reflect on their shared heritage, and reaffirm their commitment to protecting the unique environment that makes these islands so special.
This year, we at Canary Islands Green marked the occasion in a way that felt deeply fitting: by bringing people together at Playa Los Enojados in Las Galletas for a community beach cleanup. What followed was one of the most energising and rewarding events we have had the privilege of organising.
A community that shows up
Despite the intense Canarian heat, more than 50 volunteers arrived at Playa Los Enojados ready to get to work. Families, local residents, community groups and supporters of all ages came together with a shared sense of purpose, and the results spoke for themselves. In just a few hours, the group collected more than 500 kg of rubbish from the beach and surrounding areas.
Events like these serve as a powerful reminder that environmental action is about far more than cleaning beaches. They are about education, awareness and building a stronger, more connected community. The energy and positivity on display throughout the day were a testament to just how much people care about the place they call home.
Celebrating together
After several hours of hard work in the sun, volunteers were treated to a paella lunch, and it was absolutely delicious. Sharing a meal together created a wonderful atmosphere that gave everyone the opportunity to relax, reflect on what had been achieved, and celebrate as a community. Moments like these are just as important as the cleanup itself: they are what turn a single event into something people remember and want to be part of again.

We are deeply grateful to the many partners and individuals who made the day possible:
Clara Pérez and the Ayuntamiento de Arona, who sponsored the paella lunch and helped make the post-cleanup celebration so memorable.
Wanda, Hanna and all the Voluntarios Costa del Silencio, whose energy, enthusiasm and continued commitment to environmental action are a constant source of inspiration.
Oasis FM, for helping promote the event and spreading awareness throughout the local community.

Closing Reflection
At Canary Islands Green, we have always believed that protecting the environment is not something any single organisation can achieve alone. It requires local residents, businesses, volunteers, municipalities and visitors all working together towards a shared vision: a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Canary Islands.
This Día de Canarias cleanup was a perfect example of what becomes possible when community spirit, environmental awareness and collective action align. To every single person who joined us: thank you. You helped protect this beautiful coastline for the generations who will call these islands home long after us.
Canary Green’s tips to enjoying sustainable tourism in Canary Islands
Visiting Canary Islands on holiday doesn’t give you free rein to leave your values and principles at home. We encourage travellers to seek out sustainable options and keep up with environmental practices while travelling. Our top tips for a relaxed and wholesome stay include:
- Consider green transport options. Are you able to take a ferry to the island instead of flying? While you are here is a car necessary? Investigate public transport links or choose green options such as electric cars, green-hydrogen cars or e-bikes.
- Choose destinations that value sustainability and choose green alternatives such as solar power, recycling and energy-efficient architecture. This extends to places that value workers’ rights and the impact on the local community.
- Bring your own water bottle with you and refill it instead of buying single-use plastic bottles.
- Make use of the recycling when out and about and don’t just throw your rubbish in the nearest bin.
- Take advantage of local knowledge and immerse yourself in the culture through campaigns such as #Ilovecanarias and #meatfreemondaycanarias.
- Most of all, have fun and enjoy your time in the Canary Islands.
