Join the Worldwide Movement for World Earth Day tENERIFE with a Beach Clean up
Canary Green is devoted to encouraging and promoting sustainability throughout the Canary Islands and beyond – and how better to celebrate Earth Day than embarking on a beach clean?!
World Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22nd, and it serves as a reminder for us to protect and preserve our planet. One of the many ways we can do this is by participating in beach clean-ups. Our beaches are precious resources, providing us with recreation, relaxation, and scenic beauty. However, they are also vulnerable to pollution, and we must take action to protect them. In this blog post, we will discuss the importance of beach clean-ups and how you can get involved.
The Problem with Beach Pollution
Beach pollution is a global issue that affects not only the health of our oceans and marine life but also our own health. Beach pollution is caused by a variety of factors, including littering, sewage overflow, oil spills, and plastic waste. Plastic waste is particularly problematic because it does not biodegrade but instead breaks down into smaller pieces, called microplastics, that can be ingested by marine life and eventually make their way into our food chain.
Beach pollution has a severe impact on marine ecosystems, disrupting the balance of natural systems and causing harm to marine life. For example, sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, which can lead to choking or starvation. Seabirds often ingest small plastic particles, which can block their digestive tracts and cause them to starve. Additionally, plastic pollution on beaches can harm tourism, negatively impacting local economies.
The Solution: Beach Clean-Ups
Beach clean-ups are an effective way to address beach pollution. They involve removing litter and debris from beaches and surrounding areas. Beach clean-ups help prevent litter from making its way into the ocean, protecting marine life and habitats.
Beach clean-ups also help raise awareness about the issue of beach pollution. By participating in a beach clean-up, you are taking action to protect the environment and sending a message to others that this issue is important. The beach clean-up is not only a practical and tangible way to make a difference but also an eye-opening experience for many participants. They discover first-hand the extent and impact of human waste on natural ecosystems, and they realize the importance of taking responsibility for our own actions and choices. At our beach clean-up volunteers have the opportunity to connect with like-minded people and build a sense of community around a shared goal.

MORE AND MORE AMAZING IDEAS
The beach clean-up is just a small part of the bigger picture. Earth Day is a reminder that every day is an opportunity to make conscious and sustainable choices that reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to a better world. Here are some ways you can help:
Reduce, reuse, and recycle: Take a proactive approach to waste reduction and try to avoid single-use plastics, excess packaging, and disposable products. Look for alternatives, such as reusable bags, water bottles, and utensils, and recycle whenever possible.
Conserve energy: Turn off lights and appliances when not in use, adjust your thermostat, use energy-efficient bulbs, and explore renewable energy options, such as solar or wind power.
Support local and ethical products: Choose food and goods that are produced and transported with minimal impact on the environment
Leaving beach clean up with great feeling
The beach clean-up was more than just a one-day event. It was a call to action, a reminder of our shared responsibility, and a celebration of our potential to create positive change. It was a chance to connect with like-minded people, learn from each other, and make lasting connections that transcend boundaries and differences.
So let’s keep the momentum going, let’s keep the beaches clean, and let’s keep the spirit of Earth Day alive all year long. The shores are waiting for us, and so are the creatures that call them home. Let’s show them we care, and let’s show ourselves what we’re made of.
