Located in the south of Tenerife, K9 Dog Shelter Tenerife is a place dedicated to rescuing, caring for, and rehoming dogs that are waiting for a second chance. The shelter relies heavily on volunteers and community support to keep things running. We visited the shelter and spent time walking the dogs, giving them attention, and helping them get some fresh air and exercise.
The experience was relaxed but very meaningful. Walking the dogs along the shelter paths made it easy to connect with them one by one. Some were full of energy and excited to explore, while others were calmer and simply enjoyed being close to people. One of the most memorable moments was seeing how quickly the dogs warmed up and responded to simple kindness. It showed how much a short walk or bit of attention can mean for them.
Sustainable Practices Observed
- Animal welfare focus (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being): Providing proper care, food, shelter, and medical attention to rescued dogs, supporting their physical and emotional well-being.
- Volunteer-based support (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities): Relying on local and international volunteers strengthens community engagement and shared responsibility.
- Adoption efforts (SDG 15: Life on Land): Actively rehoming dogs helps reduce long-term shelter populations and promotes responsible animal care.
- Resource awareness (SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production): Making use of donations and shared resources helps reduce waste and supports more efficient daily operations.
- Awareness and education (SDG 4: Quality Education): Visitors learn about responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, and the importance of adoption over purchasing pets.
These practices align with responsible travel Canary Islands values, where visitors are encouraged to contribute positively to local initiatives. Supporting places like this connects well with sustainable tourism Tenerife and eco-friendly activities Tenerife, as it combines meaningful experiences with social impact while promoting awareness and responsibility.

Canary Green’s tips to enjoying sustainable tourism in Canary Islands
Visiting Canary Islands on holiday doesn’t give you free rein to leave your values and principles at home. We encourage travellers to seek out sustainable options and keep up with environmental practices while travelling. Our top tips for a relaxed and wholesome stay include:
- Consider green transport options. Are you able to take a ferry to the island instead of flying? While you are here is a car necessary? Investigate public transport links or choose green options such as electric cars, green-hydrogen cars or e-bikes.
- Choose destinations that value sustainability and choose green alternatives such as solar power, recycling and energy-efficient architecture. This extends to places that value workers’ rights and the impact on the local community.
- Bring your own water bottle with you and refill it instead of buying single-use plastic bottles.
- Make use of the recycling when out and about and don’t just throw your rubbish in the nearest bin.
- Take advantage of local knowledge and immerse yourself in the culture through campaigns such as #Ilovecanarias and #meatfreemondaycanarias.
- Most of all, have fun and enjoy your time in the Canary Islands.
