Exploring the Coast with Breathingwater Tenerife

The Canary Team had the pleasure of doing a follow-up kayak tour with the wonderful Mehran of Breathingwater Tenerife (check out our first experience here).

We were once again swept away by our guide’s attention to detail, be it safety or providing complementary water, his knowledge of the area and his focus on protecting the environment.

Why Kayak?

You may be asking yourself, why should I kayak? In short: it’s great fun!
Kayaking not only gives you the opportunity to move your body, explore regions of the island otherwise hard to get to and reconnect with yourself and nature, it also provides a new and fun experience which is open to most budgets, ages and levels! Trust me I had never even touched a kayak but with Mehran’s help and clear instructions it was easy breezy!

Protecting our Oceans

Given that kayaking relies only on the occupant’s body to move it, it is a great way to explore without using motorized vessels that tend to disturb the flora and fauna. When you go kayaking you can fully enjoy your experience with the added knowledge that you are doing so without harming our mother earth, just make sure you wear ocean friendly sunscreen and you will have an experience you won’t soon forget!

Canary Green’s tips to enjoying sustainable tourism in Tenerife

Visiting Tenerife on holiday doesn’t give you free rein to leave your values and principles at home. We encourage travellers to seek out sustainable options and keep up with environmental practices while travelling. Our top tips for a relaxed and wholesome stay include:

  • Consider green transport options. Are you able to take a ferry to the island instead of flying? While you are here is a car necessary? Investigate public transport links or choose green options such as electric cars, green-hydrogen cars or e-bikes.
  • Choose destinations that value sustainability and choose green alternatives such as solar power, recycling and energy-efficient architecture. This extends to places that value workers’ rights and the impact on the local community.
  • Bring your own water bottle with you and refill it instead of buying single-use plastic bottles.
  • Make use of the recycling when out and about and don’t just throw your rubbish in the nearest bin.
  • Take advantage of local knowledge and immerse yourself in the culture through campaigns such as #Ilovecanarias and #meatfreemondaycanarias
  • Most of all, have fun and enjoy your time in the Canary Islands.
