Finca Canarias in La Gomera: Experiencing Sustainable Aloe Vera Farming in Hermigua

When we visited Finca Canarias in Hermigua, La Gomera, we quickly realised this was more than just a farm visit. It was a genuinely interesting and eye-opening experience that perfectly captures what sustainable tourism in the Canary Islands can look like.

Aloe Vera with Deep Island Roots

La Gomera already asks something of you before you even arrive — a ferry crossing, winding mountain roads, a pace that forces you to slow down. And nestled in the lush northwest of the island, beside the Barranco de Monteforte and just 8km from the famous Garajonay National Park, you’ll find Finca Canarias. 8,000 aloe vera plants across 10,000 square metres of volcanic valley, in a setting so beautiful it almost distracts you from everything you’re there to learn.

What the Visit Looks Like

The guided tour takes you through the whole story — the aloe garden, the cultivation and harvesting process, and the on-site shop where the finished products are. What stood out most was how educational without being overwhelming the whole experience felt. You leave genuinely understanding what goes into the products, why the volcanic soil of the Canary Islands makes for something special, and what it actually means to buy local.

Tours run in English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish. The farm is fully accessible, there’s parking, and the team made every part of the visit feel warm and considered.

Why This is What Sustainable Tourism Looks Like

Finca Canarias in Hermigua is a business where the product, the place, and the experience are completely inseparable. The farm is the visit. You’re not watching a presentation about aloe vera — you’re standing in it, smelling it, understanding it. And that makes all the difference.

For Canary Green, this is exactly the kind of experience we exist to highlight — tourism that respects the land it stands on and leaves visitors with more than a souvenir.

Canary Green’s tips to enjoying sustainable tourism in Canary Islands

Visiting Canary Islands on holiday doesn’t give you free rein to leave your values and principles at home. We encourage travellers to seek out sustainable options and keep up with environmental practices while travelling. Our top tips for a relaxed and wholesome stay include:

  • Consider green transport options. Are you able to take a ferry to the island instead of flying? While you are here is a car necessary? Investigate public transport links or choose green options such as electric cars, green-hydrogen cars or e-bikes.
  • Choose destinations that value sustainability and choose green alternatives such as solar power, recycling and energy-efficient architecture. This extends to places that value workers’ rights and the impact on the local community.
  • Bring your own water bottle with you and refill it instead of buying single-use plastic bottles.
  • Make use of the recycling when out and about and don’t just throw your rubbish in the nearest bin.
  • Take advantage of local knowledge and immerse yourself in the culture through campaigns such as #Ilovecanarias and #meatfreemondaycanarias
  • Most of all, have fun and enjoy your time in the Canary Islands.
