morning yoga lesson in el medano

Finding balance by the sea: Yoga morning session in El Médano

Yesterday, our team enjoyed a wonderful morning yoga session with michaelanavarova_yoga in El Médano  , one of Tenerife’s most relaxed and naturally beautiful coastal towns. The weather couldn’t have been better, clear skies, warm sunshine, and the calming sound of waves breaking just a few meters away. It created the perfect atmosphere for a grounding and energizing practice.

A Class for Everyone

We all brought our own towels or mats, settled into the soft sand, and got ready for a full hour of yoga with our instructor Michaela. She was incredibly kind, patient, and attentive, guiding us through each movement and explaining everything clearly. Her teaching style makes the class accessible to absolutely everyone, beginners who have never tried yoga, as well as advanced practitioners looking to deepen their practice. Truly, it’s a session where anyone can feel comfortable and included.

The class itself focused on gentle stretching, mindful breathing, and slow flows that helped us release tension and wake up the body. We moved through basic asanas, worked on posture and balance, and took time to reconnect with our breath – something so simple, yet so powerful. The combination of sunshine, sea breeze, and rhythmic ocean sounds made every pose feel even more calming and refreshing.

One of the best things about practicing yoga outdoors, especially by the beach, is the connection with nature. Breathing in fresh ocean air, and hearing the waves behind you adds a whole new dimension to the practice. It becomes much more than exercise, it’s a moment to reset, relax, and recharge.

This yoga session in El Médano proved to be a beautiful way to start the day and reminded us how important it is to slow down, stretch, breathe, and take care of our body and mind. Whether you’re joining for the first time or already love yoga, this experience truly offers something for everyone.

Why is Yoga good option?

Practicing yoga is not only beneficial for the body and mind, it also naturally aligns with the principles of sustainability. Yoga cultivates mindfulness, balance, and intentional living, values that directly support a more conscious and eco-friendly lifestyle. When practiced outdoors, like on the beach in El Médano, it requires almost no resources: no electricity, no equipment beyond your own mat or towel, just fresh air and the natural environment. This minimal-impact approach encourages simplicity, respect for nature, and a deeper connection with the surroundings. Yoga also helps people slow down, reflect on their daily habits, and make more mindful decisions, the kind of mindset that supports long-term sustainable living.

Combine Yoga with Exploring El Médano

Joining michaelanavarova_yoga session on the beach is also a wonderful opportunity to explore El Médano, one of the most charming towns in Tenerife. Known for its laid-back atmosphere, golden sandy beaches, and vibrant surf culture, El Médano is the perfect place to spend a relaxing day. After your practice, you can stroll through the town’s cozy streets, enjoy fresh local food in one of the beachside cafés, or simply watch the kitesurfers dance across the waves. Combining yoga with a visit to El Médano gives you not only a healthy start to the day, but also the chance to experience the authentic, local side of Tenerife.

Canary Green’s tips to enjoying sustainable tourism in Canary Islands

Visiting Canary Islands on holiday doesn’t give you free rein to leave your values and principles at home. We encourage travellers to seek out sustainable options and keep up with environmental practices while travelling. Our top tips for a relaxed and wholesome stay include:

  • Consider green transport options. Are you able to take a ferry to the island instead of flying? While you are here is a car necessary? Investigate public transport links or choose green options such as electric cars, green-hydrogen cars or e-bikes.
  • Choose destinations that value sustainability and choose green alternatives such as solar power, recycling and energy-efficient architecture. This extends to places that value workers’ rights and the impact on the local community.
  • Bring your own water bottle with you and refill it instead of buying single-use plastic bottles.
  • Make use of the recycling when out and about and don’t just throw your rubbish in the nearest bin.
  • Take advantage of local knowledge and immerse yourself in the culture through campaigns such as #Ilovecanarias and #meatfreemondaycanarias
  • Most of all, have fun and enjoy your time in the Canary Islands.
