Luxalad El Médano: Experiencing Healthy Food in Tenerife

We got to check out Luxalad’s newly opened location, tucked away in the charming streets just off the main square in El Médano! After successfully running Luxalad in Los Cristianos for four years, Laurence has now expanded her project to El Médano enlarging her offer of fresh, locally sourced, and consciously prepared food.

The concept is simple but brilliant: you build your own bowl or wrap. You start with a base like pasta salad or quinoa and then choose from different protein options like feta cheese, chicken, or homemade hummus. After that, you can add a colorful variety of vegetables (from corn to beetroot), choose your dressing (the Caesar is a must-try!), and top it off with nuts or seeds. Each of us created completely different combinations, yet everything was incredibly fresh and satisfying.

Every ingredient is prepared by hand. You can genuinely taste the care and attention in each bite. We couldn’t leave without trying dessert. So we also tried yoghurt with fruits and granola and cocoa chia pudding both perfect for a nourishing but sweet finish.

Sustainable Practices In Action

Luxalad demonstrates how sustainable food concepts can be integrated into daily life in Tenerife.

  • SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption & Production
    • Locally sourced ingredients supporting regional producers
    • Thoughtful ingredient selection prioritizing quality and origin
  • SDG 3 – Good Health & Well-Being
    • Fresh, hand-prepared meals reducing processed food consumption
    • nutritious, balanced meals encourages healthier lifestyle choices

Experiences like this show that sustainable tourism in Tenerife doesn’t always mean large-scale eco-projects. Sometimes it’s about everyday decisions like where we eat and what we consume. Choosing places like Luxalad supports responsible travel in the Canary Islands and strengthens eco-friendly food initiatives.

Canary Green’s tips to enjoying sustainable tourism in Canary Islands

Visiting Canary Islands on holiday doesn’t give you free rein to leave your values and principles at home. We encourage travellers to seek out sustainable options and keep up with environmental practices while travelling. Our top tips for a relaxed and wholesome stay include:

  • Consider green transport options. Are you able to take a ferry to the island instead of flying? While you are here is a car necessary? Investigate public transport links or choose green options such as electric cars, green-hydrogen cars or e-bikes.
  • Choose destinations that value sustainability and choose green alternatives such as solar power, recycling and energy-efficient architecture. This extends to places that value workers’ rights and the impact on the local community.
  • Bring your own water bottle with you and refill it instead of buying single-use plastic bottles.
  • Make use of the recycling when out and about and don’t just throw your rubbish in the nearest bin.
  • Take advantage of local knowledge and immerse yourself in the culture through campaigns such as #Ilovecanarias and #meatfreemondaycanarias
  • Most of all, have fun and enjoy your time in the Canary Islands.
