Yesterday, members of the Canarygreen Team had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on soap-making workshop at Mynd Hotel. The goal of the workshop was to create our own soap using natural ingredients. Juan led the workshop and, along with Nancy, is an official artisan at a cosmetic factory specializing in solid soaps and shampoos. Their family business, located in Los Silos, places great emphasis on biodegradable ingredients and eco-friendly packaging.
Taking part in the workshop provided a much-needed escape from the daily grind, allowing us to focus on the hands-on art of crafting with natural ingredients.
From Scratch to Soap: The Making Process
Juan carefully mixed lye (extreme caution should always be exercised when handling this ingredient) with olive oil. Before mixing, the temperatures of these ingredients were equalized to ensure a smooth process.
The task of the attendees was to choose two ingredients and one pigment. We chose parsley and volcanic sand. Volcanic sand is excellent for exfoliating the body skin, although it’s not recommended for use on the face due to its higher sensitivity. Parsley, on the other hand, is packed with antioxidants and vitamins A, C, and E, making it a perfect addition to skincare products.
Next, we had to choose between three different pigments to add color to our soap.

The next step was to mix the dry ingredients with the liquid mixture. For the final touch, we added 8 drops of essential oil.
The only downside for all participants is the waiting time—our soap needs to cure for 3 weeks before it’s ready to use. This waiting period allows for saponification, a process that neutralizes harsh chemicals, making the soap safe for use.
„We make each piece of natural soap by hand, using the same tools our grandmothers used to make soap .“

We can’t wait the full 3 weeks to see our soaps! In the meantime, we leave you with something to think about: skincare and cosmetics don’t have to be complicated. They can be embraced with nature, using ingredients that are not harmful to us or to the Earth. By choosing natural products, we not only care for our skin but also contribute to a healthier planet.
Canary Green’s tips to enjoying sustainable tourism in Tenerife
Visiting Tenerife on holiday doesn’t give you free rein to leave your values and principles at home. We encourage travellers to seek out sustainable options and keep up with environmental practices while travelling. Our top tips for a relaxed and wholesome stay include:
- Consider green transport options. Are you able to take a ferry to the island instead of flying? While you are here is a car necessary? Investigate public transport links or choose green options such as electric cars, green-hydrogen cars or e-bikes.
- Choose destinations that value sustainability and choose green alternatives such as solar power, recycling and energy-efficient architecture. This extends to places that value workers’ rights and the impact on the local community.
- Bring your own water bottle with you and refill it instead of buying single-use plastic bottles.
- Make use of the recycling when out and about and don’t just throw your rubbish in the nearest bin.
- Take advantage of local knowledge and immerse yourself in the culture through campaigns such as #Ilovecanarias and #meatfreemondaycanarias.
- Most of all, have fun and enjoy your time in the Canary Islands.
