ORI Surf: Experiencing Sustainable Surfing in Tenerife

During our time exploring Tenerife, we visited ORI Surf, located in the south of the island around El Médano — one of the best spots for surfing in Tenerife. Specialising in mindful and small-scale surf experiences, ORI Surf offers more than just lessons — it creates a deeper connection between people, the ocean, and nature.

We joined a surf session under the warm Tenerife sun, starting with a relaxed introduction on the beach before heading into the water. What stood out most was the calm and encouraging atmosphere — no pressure, just enjoying the process. One of the most memorable moments was catching a wave for the first time while feeling fully present in the ocean, surrounded by natural beauty.

Sustainable Practices Observed

  • Small group sizes to reduce environmental impact and improve learning quality (SDG 12: Responsible Consumption & Production)
  • Encouraging respect for the ocean and natural surroundings (SDG 13: Climate Action)
  • Promoting ocean awareness and mindful interaction with marine ecosystems (SDG 14: Life Below Water)
  • Supporting local surf culture and community-based experiences (SDG 11: Sustainable Communities)

ORI Surf reflects the values of sustainable tourism in Tenerife by focusing on quality over quantity and encouraging responsible travel in the Canary Islands. Experiences like this highlight how eco-friendly activities in Tenerife can be both enjoyable and impactful.

By choosing mindful surf experiences, visitors contribute to a tourism model that respects both nature and local communities — something Canary Green actively promotes.

Canary Green’s tips to enjoying sustainable tourism in Canary Islands

Visiting Canary Islands on holiday doesn’t give you free rein to leave your values and principles at home. We encourage travellers to seek out sustainable options and keep up with environmental practices while travelling. Our top tips for a relaxed and wholesome stay include:

  • Consider green transport options. Are you able to take a ferry to the island instead of flying? While you are here is a car necessary? Investigate public transport links or choose green options such as electric cars, green-hydrogen cars or e-bikes.
  • Choose destinations that value sustainability and choose green alternatives such as solar power, recycling and energy-efficient architecture. This extends to places that value workers’ rights and the impact on the local community.
  • Bring your own water bottle with you and refill it instead of buying single-use plastic bottles.
  • Make use of the recycling when out and about and don’t just throw your rubbish in the nearest bin.
  • Take advantage of local knowledge and immerse yourself in the culture through campaigns such as #Ilovecanarias and #meatfreemondaycanarias
  • Most of all, have fun and enjoy your time in the Canary Islands.
