Safety at the Natural Tidal Pool in Los Gigantes

Please Respect Local Warnings

Los Gigantes is known for its dramatic cliffs, warm weather, and striking volcanic coastline. One of its most photographed spots is the natural tidal pool formed in the lava rocks — a beautiful place to enjoy when the sea is calm.

But this location can become extremely dangerous in seconds, and sadly, multiple lives have been lost here over the years. Most recently, four people died after entering the tidal pool despite official closures due to unsafe conditions. This is not the first incident — and unless warnings are taken seriously, it will not be the last.

Why the Tidal Pool Can Turn Deadly

Even when it looks calm, the ocean here is unpredictable:

  • Sudden large waves can crash into the pool with huge force

  • Strong currents can pull swimmers under or out to sea

  • Slippery rocks increase the risk of falling

  • When waves rise, exiting the pool can become impossible

Emergency services respond to incidents here every year. Not everyone is fortunate enough to be rescued.

Respect All Warnings and Closures

When lifeguards, police, or the Ayuntamiento close access, it is because conditions are genuinely dangerous. These warnings are not optional — they are there to save lives.

Whether you live here or are visiting:

👉 If the beach or tidal pool is closed, do not enter.

👉 If authorities ask you to move away, please do so immediately.

👉 If signs say “Prohibido el paso” or “No swimming,” respect them.

Ignoring these warnings endangers your own life and the lives of the rescue teams who may need to risk everything to help you.

Responsible Travel Means Respecting Nature

Sustainable and responsible travel isn’t only about protecting the environment — it’s also about respecting local rules, listening to experts, and understanding the risks of natural spaces.

The tidal pool is part of a fragile coastal ecosystem, and responsible behaviour helps preserve it and keeps everyone safe.

By following guidance from local authorities, visitors show care not only for themselves, but for the community, the environment, and the long-term future of this spectacular area.

Why This Matters for Everyone

If serious accidents continue, the authorities may be forced to restrict or permanently close access to the tidal pool. That would be a loss for residents, visitors, and the natural heritage of Los Gigantes.

We all want this special place to remain accessible — and that can only happen if everyone respects the ocean and the rules put in place to protect us.

As a local business committed to our community and to promoting responsible, sustainable tourism, we want every visitor to enjoy Los Gigantes safely.

Please remember:

  • If you are told not to enter the tidal pool, don’t enter.
  • If the beach is closed, stay away.
  • If conditions look rough, avoid the area entirely.

No photograph, no swim, and no moment of excitement is worth risking your life.

Travel responsibly. Respect nature. Stay safe.

Canary Green’s tips to enjoying sustainable tourism in Canary Islands

Visiting Canary Islands on holiday doesn’t give you free rein to leave your values and principles at home. We encourage travellers to seek out sustainable options and keep up with environmental practices while travelling. Our top tips for a relaxed and wholesome stay include:

  • Consider green transport options. Are you able to take a ferry to the island instead of flying? While you are here is a car necessary? Investigate public transport links or choose green options such as electric cars, green-hydrogen cars or e-bikes.
  • Choose destinations that value sustainability and choose green alternatives such as solar power, recycling and energy-efficient architecture. This extends to places that value workers’ rights and the impact on the local community.
  • Bring your own water bottle with you and refill it instead of buying single-use plastic bottles.
  • Make use of the recycling when out and about and don’t just throw your rubbish in the nearest bin.
  • Take advantage of local knowledge and immerse yourself in the culture through campaigns such as #Ilovecanarias and #meatfreemondaycanarias.
  • Most of all, have fun and enjoy your time in the Canary Islands.
