We supports the hydrogen mobility in the Canary Islands

Canary Green was honoured to collaborate with ITER on the EU-funded SeaFuel project, part of the Interreg programme. This innovative initiative aimed to introduce green hydrogen as a clean energy solution for the rental car and transport sectors in the Canary Islands.

SEAFUEL is a European innovation project aiming to harness green hydrogen—produced from seawater and renewable energies like wind and solar—to power transport in isolated territories such as the Canary Islands.

A pilot hydrogen refuelling station was installed at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables (ITER) in Tenerife. It produces around 25 kg of green hydrogen per day and notably supplies a local fleet of hydrogen vehicles.

What is SEAFUEL?

SEAFUEL harnesses the power of renewable energy, mainly solar and wind, to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis. This clean fuel is then used to power vehicles without releasing harmful emissions. Designed specifically for island communities, the project reduces reliance on imported fossil fuels and demonstrates how hydrogen technology can work at a local scale, making transport more sustainable and resilient.

How it works?

SEAFUEL uses renewable energy sources like solar and wind to generate electricity, which powers an electrolyzer that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is then compressed, stored, and used to fuel specially adapted hydrogen vehicles. When these vehicles run, the only byproduct is water vapor—making it a zero-emission solution. This process creates a sustainable, closed-loop energy system that transforms natural resources into clean, usable fuel for everyday transport.

Canary Green’s Role

At Canary Green, we believe that real change happens when innovation meets public awareness. That’s why we proudly supported SEAFUEL, a groundbreaking initiative proving that the future of transport can be both clean and local. Here’s how we contributed to SEAFUEL’s mission:
  • Video and media production to share the project’s story
  • Building relationships with local rental car agencies to explore real-world applications
  • Introducing the concept of hydrogen vehicles to the public in accessible, engaging ways
  • Organising test drives with tourists and collecting valuable insights through questionnaires
Although the project’s funding was not renewed, the concept remains powerful — and we believe the future is green hydrogen. We’re proud to have played a part in exploring sustainable transport solutions for the Canary Islands, and we look forward to supporting similar innovations in the future.
