While in Tenerife, we decided it was time to finally try something new: surfing! We signed up for a class with Ika Ika Surf School in Playa de las Américas, and spoiler alert: we had a blast.
Some of us were total beginners (the kind that had never even touched a surfboard), but from the start, everything felt super chill. Our instructor Lucas greeted us with a smile and immediately made us feel at ease. He gave us everything we needed: a board, a wetsuit, a t-shirt and rock shoes (so we were to start!).
Before hitting the water, he explained all the basics clearly, how to lie on the board, how to paddle, how to stand up, and how not to panic if you fall (which we definitely did… more than once!). He also explained to us all the safety roles, to always be safe in the water!
– Bonus point: Lucas speaks fluently several languages (Spanish, English, French and Italian) so his explanations were super clear and easy to follow, especially for beginners. –
Then it was time to hit the waves. Lucas stayed with us the whole time in the water, helping us catch wave after wave. He was really encouraging and gave us just the right tips to actually stand up and ride. Yes, we managed to surf on our first try and it felt amazing!

- Choose destinations that value sustainability and choose green alternatives such as solar power, recycling and energy-efficient architecture. This extends to places that value workers’ rights and the impact on the local community.
- Bring your own water bottle with you and refill it instead of buying single-use plastic bottles.
- Make use of the recycling when out and about and don’t just throw your rubbish in the nearest bin.
- Take advantage of local knowledge and immerse yourself in the culture through campaigns such as #Ilovecanarias and #meatfreemondaycanarias.
- Most of all, have fun and enjoy your time in the Canary Islands.
