Celebrating World Cleanup Day 2021 at Playa de Lima, Tenerife

The Best Beaches in Tenerife: Should Be Enjoyed Clean

World Cleanup Day 2021. It is no secret that Tenerife is home to some of the best beaches for winter sun. But, the effects of mass tourism mixed with daily local life are very much present on the shorelines of Tenerife. From the remains of a recently devoured picnic to disregarded building waste little by little the volcanic black sand is being overtaken by debris and pollution. It breaks our hearts to see this happen to the best beaches in Tenerife. So, when we heard about a beach cleanup held at Playa de Lima organised by Ecomplicados in conjunction with the Ayuntamiento de Arafo (Municipality of Arafo) we jumped at the opportunity to help.

Why Playa de Lima is one of the Best Beaches in Tenerife for a Cleanup?

Playa de Lima is the name given to the small coastal town inhabited by 150 people. But it is also the name of the small strip of pebble beach that separates the town from the sea. Playa de Lima is part of Arafo on the southeast coast of the island, however, it is often overlooked. It is one of the best places for a cleanup since it is the final destination for all the litter that gets swept through the neighbouring ravines.

The cleanup is the last chance to collect the litter before it gets engulfed by the fierce ocean waves and lost forever. Thanks to the strong currents, lots of debris from the ocean also gets washed up on this beach, adding to the already overburdened coastline. On arrival at the beach, it didn’t appear to be so littered and dirty but upon closer inspection, there didn’t seem to be an end to the amount of rubbish we found.

Beach Cleanup: An alternative beach day

While donning heavy duty gloves and using eagle eye vision to hunt down any scraps of litter is maybe not what comes to mind when you think of a Tenerife beach day. But, it is one of the best ways to enjoy the coastline. Not only does it give you a chance to get up close to the natural beauty of the beach, it is also a super social activity. Groups of like minded people gathered together with one aim- to clear the coastline. The result? Over 500 kilos of waste cleared from one tiny Tenerife beach.

The Playa de Lima beach cleanup was a great success and it would not have been possible without the invaluable help from Luis, Galilea, Mario, Deepak khatnani from Ecomplicados. Nor without the support of the Ayuntamiento de Arafo, Empresa Chafiras, Calidad Pascual and Distribuciones David Fernandez. Together we can make positive change on the island for a sustainable future.

In short

What are the benefits of a beach clean-up?

• Help save the planet from contamination
• Ensure that no animals end up being harmed by litter left on the beach
• Promoting a clean, plastic free future for Tenerife’s nature
• Making sure that the sea is clean and nice to swim in
• Turn the beach into a nice place to be again
• You - Feeling accomplished for supporting a good cause 🙂
